Our final day together was filled with lots of amazing activities! Campers started their day by "time traveling" to camp for our FREAKY FRIDAY exhibition! Campers came to camp dressed as a person from another time period. Daring Campers were so proud to have 100% participation and were given the honor of choosing the activity to end the week! Campers unanimously chose to end our week with BANANA SPLITS! After our voting, Daring Campers joined Adventure Camp for a game of Capture the Flag (in the woods!). Campers also played in the sprinklers and made Magic 8 Balls before enjoying banana splits. Thank you for an amazing summer!
Thursday, August 7 -- Squire's Castle & St. Ignatius Circus Company!
Today, our amazing Magicians learned some very neat tricks! To start the day, campers challenged themselves on the Project Adventure Course - experiencing Mohalk Walk, Nitro Crossing, Wild Woozie, AND Triangular Traverse! Wow! Rain in the afternoon, kept us inside for a bit, but we were still able to have a Water Balloon Toss, play Water Balloon Parachute, and have an "Over/Under" Relay Race! To end the day, campers learned some card tricks, created a rabbit to pull out of their hats, and learned how to make a q-tip disappear!
Monday, August 4 -- Dare to be a Magician
Welcome back, Daring Campers! We are thrilled that you are back and we have many magical activities planned for you! Campers started their day by giving themselves a magician makeover - magical names, wands, and magician hats. Campers also went swimming at the Beachwood JCC and explored the creek.
Friday, August 1 -- Sounds of Music
Attention all Rock Stars - Camp Talent Show TODAY! Campers came to camp dressed as their favorite musician, musical artist, or with their favorite musical instrument. Some even chose to participate in a Camp Concert, while others opted to be part of our cheerful audience. After our camp concert, we held our weekly FREAKY FRIDAY exhibition and after counting participation, we revealed that DARING CAMP was the winner of this week's FREAKY FRIDAY extravaganza and they got to choose our end of week activity! They decided that they wanted to have a camp-wide scavenger hunt, with candy kabobs as the prize! Campers collected a different type of candy at each scavenger hunt location and at the very end got to put together a candy kabob to take home! Yum!
Thursday, July 31 -- Club Rock!
Magic Tree House and Daring Camp travelled to Club Rock in Beachwood to have the total ROCK STAR experience!
Daring Camp is really getting in the "Rock Star" spirit! Campers made jingle sticks and maracas. They also began using their homemade instruments to prepare for a performance later this week!
Tuesday, July 29 -- Guitars and Project Adventure!
Our Rock Stars had a great day full of crafts and fun activities! They started their day making and customizing their very own guitars. Campers didn't want to put them down - continually trying to perfect their tunes. After lunch, campers played on the playground and watched a Magic Show by our very own Mrs. Forquer! Campers were AMAZED at her magical abilities. She made objects appear and even made her water bottle talk. To end the day, campers spent some time on Triangular Traverse, one of our many Project Adventure elements.
Monday, July 28 -- Dare to be a Rock Star!
Welcome back Daring Campers! This week's theme is Dare to be a Rock Star! Our campers are in for a week full of super cool music and activities. To start the day, campers gave themselves a rock star makeover - complete with new names, tattoos, and even some "rocked out" stunner shades! In the afternoon, campers went swimming at the Beachwood JCC and played a camp-wide game of Musical Chairs!
Friday, July 25 -- Daring & Adventure Join Forces!
Today was a special day for Daring Camp - All campers were able to meet and join forces with Adventure Campers. Campers from both camps were put into small groups and given the challenge to create a container (given only select materials) to protect an egg when dropped from the top of the Catwalk! After a lunch break, campers played on the playground and enjoyed some water play in the sprinklers and on the slip and slide. To end the day, campers made ocean mosaics with shells and sand and tie-dyed t-shirts for their FREAKY FRIDAY activity! Thanks for a fantastic week!
The cold was no match for our Deep Sea Explorers who are used to dealing with uncommon temperatures. Campers started their day by playing team work challenge games, like Key Punch, and sharing ocean facts. They also "caught and bottled" their own jelly fish! Afterwards, campers had a chance to play on the playground and swim at the indoor pool at the Beachwood JCC. Upon return to camp, campers were delighted to see that Adventure Camp's Mr. Allen had started a camp fire and campers got to enjoy s'mores (made by our wonderful Adventure Campers) and play games!
Daring Campers spent the morning challenging themselves during teamwork activities. They worked together to complete Nitro Crossing and Whale Watch (which, our campers thought was very fitting for our "deep sea" themed week). In the afternoon, campers enjoyed some time on the playground, played water games like Drip Drip Splash, Water Balloon Hot Potato, and Water Bomb Tag. To end the day, campers made their very own deep sea air tanks and had popsicles to keep cool!
Monday, July 21 -- Dare to be a Deep Sea Explorer
Welcome back Daring Campers! We are very excited to start a new week of camp. Mr. Rossman, our Daring Camp leader this week, is ready for a week full of "deep sea" adventures! This morning, campers made "underwater viewers". They then took their underwater viewers to the creek to see what they could find under the surface of the water! After lunch, campers pretended to be scuba divers in the pool and played games, like the Magic Talking Water Bottle, a camp favorite!
Friday, July 18 -- Daring Trailblazers
We are so sad to see our Daring Campers leave for the weekend. We have had so much fun learning how to be daring Trailblazers! To begin the day, campers participated in our FREAKY FRIDAY extravaganza! This week, our themes was "Yeehaw, Cowboy/Cowgirl". We were ver impressed with the variety of costumes that came to camp today. In addition to FREAKY FRIDAY, campers put their trail clues to the test, did some Project Adventure, made candles, made butter and played in the sprinklers! To end the day, all campers participated in our FREAKY FRIDAY activity - face painting and popsicles! Thanks for a great week!
Today, our resilient Trailblazers learned about using nature to create create clues that show others where to go. In small groups, they planned their path and tomorrow, others Trailblazers will try to follow their paths. Campers also worked as a team on the Nitro Crossing low element, played lots of games, had fun on the playground, and finished their day at the creek!
Wednesday, July 16 -- Daring Campers: Prepared for Anything!
Our Trailblazers spent the day learning key skills that could help them in times of emergencies! First, campers learned how to make a homemade compass using a magnet, styrofoam cup, and a sewing needle. Campers magnetized the needle by rubbing it on the magnet. Then, they placed the needle inside the torn-off bottom of the cup and put it in water. Campers were amazed when the needle pointed North! Afterwards, campers were visited by Julie Swartz, Laurel School's Athletic Trainer. Julie taught campers some basic first aid skills and strategies for helping people who have cuts/scrapes, sprains, breaks, and insect bites. These are all valuable skills for our campers! Then, campers enjoyed lunch and a swim at the Beachwood JCC. To end the day, campers played games on the softball field.
Tuesday, July 15 -- Century Village
Magic Tree House Campers and Daring Campers travelled to Century Village in Burton, Ohio to learn all about what it may have been like to live in the past! We saw an old cabin, house, store, school, and church. We also got to make marbles. Life certainly was different back then!
Welcome back Daring Campers! We have lots of fun activities planned this week. Lead by Ms. Moury and her wonderful staff, Daring Camp started their day by creating a map of the Butler Campus and learned about reading a compass. They also practiced working together on the Whale Watch. In the afternoon, they enjoyed a dip in the pool and built "vehicles" to help them travel cross country.
Friday, July 11 - Thanks for a Great Week!
Thursday, July 10 -- Cleveland Museum of Natural History
Daring Camp and Magic Tree House Camp went to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History - We had a guided "Animal Odyssey" tour where we learned animals in Ohio and in Africa. We also explored the museum on our own in the afternoon!
Wednesday, July 9 -- Can feel the Music?
Daring Camp spent the day playing games, making African Drums, and swimming! What a fun way to spend the day!
Tuesday, July 8 -- Wet and Wild Safari
It was a wet and wild day at camp today! We had to plan our day around the several storms that rolled in and our of the area. Campers started their day by playing Project Adventure activities - They definitely learned the value of working as a team. After lunch, campers spent some time on the playground, and painted an african sunset picture, complete with shadows of animals! Because of the threat of serious storms, we decided to move some of our activities to the basement of the Butler Center where we mingled with Magic Tree House Camp, Adventure Camp, and Championship Soccer Camp! Things are never boring here at Summer at Laurel!
Monday, July 7 -- Dare to be on Safari!
Daring Camp will be traveling from our Butler Campus here in Ohio all the way to Africa for this week's theme! Campers started the day by preparing for the journey -- making safari hats and binoculars. They also practiced their safari skills on a hike around campus. To finish the day, campers went swimming and played games on the pavilion.
Thursday, July 3 -- Farewell, Mad Scientists.
It has been a fantastic week with our Mad Scientists and today was the perfect ending to a great week. In the morning, campers practiced their teamwork skills on the Project Adventure Course. In the afternoon, Daring Campers played on the playground, bounced in the bouncy house, and played in the sprinklers. Our Mad Scientists also took a break from their fun to make marshmallow shooters and lava lamps. To end the day, Magic Tree House, Daring Camp, and Adventure Camp joined on the field to watch Mr. Rossman explode a watermelon and to play a scavenger hunt that resulted in a delicious popsicle prize! Thanks for a fabulous week!
Mad Scientist's duties tend to overlap with other occupations. Today, Daring Campers used cereal boxes, foil, and plastic wrap to make Solar Ovens! Their goal was to cook a s'more. Campers laid out their s'more filled solar oven on the softball fields while they played some games. After about an hour, campers checked on their creations and many found that their chocolate melted and their marshmallow was toasty warm! mmm...mmm.. GOOD! Afterwards, campers enjoyed lunch, some time in the bouncy house, and swimming. At the pool, Daring Campers played a group game of Marco Polo and Volleyball. When they returned to camp, we had a counselor vs. camper Dodgeball game!
Tuesday, July 1 -- Adventurous Inventors
Daring Camp had an exciting day full of adventure. They started their day on the Project Adventure (Low Ropes) Course - a camp favorite! Campers managed to fit everyone on the large platform, but found that fitting on the small platform was much more challenging. Campers also had a special visit from our Adventure Camp Director, Mr. Allen. After lunch, campers played on the playground and spent time doing some wild water play. To complete their fun-filled day, campers invented their very own boats out of recycled materials and took them to the creek to see how they worked!
Monday, June 30 -- Dare to be a Mad Scientist
Our Daring Campers are in for a treat because this week is being lead by Laurel's very own Mad Scientist, Mr. Rossman! Campers started the day by making slime and hiking to the creek. Our campers caught 35 crayfish! After lunch, campers went swimming, played games, and enjoyed popsicles for Miss Kara's birthday!
Friday, June 27 -- "Souper" Chefs!
Daring Campers have proven that they prevail in all that we do! As today was FREAKY FRIDAY, "Calling all Superheroes", campers came to camp dressed as their favorite real or imaginary superhero. Daring Campers impressed us with 100% participation and had the opportunity to choose the final FREAKY FRIDAY celebration activity! Afterwards, campers combined with Adventure Camp to play games and take on the Project Adventure Course. After lunch, campers played on the playground, in the sprinklers, went to the creek, and enjoyed Homemade Ice Cream (their Freaky Friday activity choice!).
Thursday, June 26 -- WE LOVE DANNY BOYS!
Daring Campers had it all today. They started the day by making Fruit & Yogurt Parfaits, catching critters in the creek, and playing games. After lunch, campers travelled to Danny Boy's Italian Eatery in Chesterland, Ohio. There, they saw what a kitchen at a real, working restaurant looks like. The chef and manager of Danny Boys gave them a tour, showed them behind the line, and each camper was able to make his/her own pizza! While the pizza cooked, campers played games in their arcade and watched the USA vs. Germany soccer game! Campers LOVED eating their pizza and even got to bring some home for their families to enjoy =)
Wednesday, June 25 -- MmMm Good!
Today, Daring Campers learned a lot about herbs and what kinds of foods go together. In the morning, they participated in a Mystery Herb Activity. Chef Moury brought herbs from her own garden and campers had to guess the herbs by their smell and appearance. Campers even had an opportunity to taste the herbs. Some of the herbs included cilantro, basil, and dill. Then, campers continued their Mystery Activity by trying to guess certain foods just by the smell, taste, and appearance. Some of the mystery foods were capers, mozzarella cheese, and olives. Afterwards, campers prepared Apple Berry Salsa using a fun combination of fresh fruit! In the afternoon, campers went swimming and then had the opportunity to enjoy their apple berry salsa.
Tomorrow is our field trip day! If your camper has a BLUE Summer at Laurel t-shirt, please have him/her wear it to camp tomorrow. A t-shirt will be given to new campers in the morning.

Tuesday, June 24 -- Cleveland Cooks are the BEST!
Our Daring Campers, newly named the Cleveland Cooks, were busy as chefs in a real kitchen today! To kick off the day, campers played Project Adventure/teamwork games and spent time on the Whale Watch (where they had to balance a board) and Mohawk Walk! After lunch, campers enjoyed some time on the playground and then cooled off with some Water Play, which included several relay races, a water balloon fight, and "Water Bomb" tag! Afterwards, campers made their new favorite treat, Waffle Tacos!
Monday, June 23 -- Dare to be a Chef!
Do you smell that? That delicious, magical, most amazing smell?? Follow your nose because our Daring Campers are "cooking up" a whole bunch of goodies this week. Under the direction of Chef Moury and Chef Andrew, campers got their very own camp cookbook and worked together to make Vegetable Pizza! ((Our counselors were very impressed with how much our campers LOVE vegetables!)) After enjoying their pizza, campers hiked to the creek in search of creek critters to cook! ((Just kidding!! We only catch and release here at Summer at Laurel!)) After lunch, campers spent time swimming and challenged themselves on the Whale Watch. To end the day, we celebrated Mr. Andrew's birthday with popsicles!
Friday, June 20 -- So Long, Spies.
As our spy week comes to an end, we must say good by to our spies-in-training. They have learned valuable information about how to be sneaky and smart spies. To begin our final day, campers came to camp ready to celebrate FREAKY FRIDAY! Our theme this week was "When I Grow Up". Daring Campers and Magic Tree House Campers made Summer at Laurel history with 100% participation! All campers had the opportunity to vote for our afternoon activity! After out Freaky Friday Extravaganza, Daring Campers hiked to the Project Adventure course where they challenged themselves on the Triangular Traverse, Nitro Crossing, and Mohawk Walk! After lunch, campers played in the sprinklers, announced discoveries made by themselves and other spies, and made Snack Necklaces, our Freaky Friday activity! Thanks for a great week!
Thursday, June 19 -- Our Spies, Our Detectives, Our Heroes!
It is always amazing how much Daring Campers can fit into their day! Campers learned about teeth prints, visited the Russell Township Police Station and Fire Department, and found clues around Butler Campus that lead them to a surprise prize!
Wednesday, June 18 -- The Chemistry Behind Being a Spy...
Daring Campers are learning that it takes A LOT of work to be a spy! To start the morning, campers learned how to use chemistry to determine mystery substances. First, they tested 4 substances, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cornstarch, using water, vinegar, and iodine to observe any reactions. Then, using what they learned about each substance, they had to figure out a "mystery substance"! Campers then learned how to dust for fingerprints and dug through "garbage" to gather clues about a suspect! After a morning of hard work, campers relaxed at the pool in the afternoon.
Tuesday, June 17 -- Adventurous Spies!
Today, our spies spent their day doing various challenges around Butler Campus. They challenged themselves on Project Adventure's low elements and during many teamwork challenges, like reversing their standing order on a log without touching the ground and turning a parachute upside down while standing on it! To cool down in the afternoon, campers combined with Magic Tree House to play water games, like Drip Drip Splash (a water version of Duck Duck Goose) and Water Balloon "Hot Potato". To end the day, campers learned about fingerprinting and even fingerprinted themselves!
Monday, June 16 -- Dare to be a Spy!
Be veeeeery quiet.... You won't even know where our Daring Campers are because they are so sneaky! Under the direction of Agent Ahmad, Agent Moury, Agent Andrew, and Agent Kristen, campers began to learn about what it takes to be a great spy! They started their day making spy disguises (there will be no pictures, as campers did not want to give their disguises away!), and seeing what they could "dig up" at the creek. After lunch, Daring camp joined with Magic Tree House Camp and Adventure Camp to go swimming at the JCC. When we returned to camp, Daring Campers discovered their first mission - to find out all they can about a fellow group member, without them knowing! They have all week to complete their task. They will share their results on Friday.
